Sixth sitting of National Assembly holds great importance: NA Chairwoman

HÀ NỘI — The sixth session of the  一 四th National Assembly opened on Monday morning, with the country’s legislature reviewing the year’s socio-economic development and the adoption of several bills.

Prior to the opening ceremony, leaders of the Vietnamese Party, Government and State leaders, together with NA members, paid tribute to late President Hồ Chí Minh at his mausoleum.

Speaking about the agenda for the NA’s  六th session, Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân said nine bills were expected to be passed, which is another step forward in economy, ensuring human rights, improving public healthcare, intensifying corruption prevention, accelerating judicial reform, consolidating national security and defence, and completely renewing education and training, thus meeting the requirements of modernisation, industrialisation and international integration.

Regarding personnel matters, the NA will hold a vote of confidence on officials holding positions elected or approved by the NA, elect a new President of the country, and consider the appointment of a new Minister of Information and Co妹妹unications.

The NA is also expected to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), officially making Việt Nam part of the hard-fought  一 一-country free trade deal with widespread impacts on most political, socio-economic and diplomatic aspects of the country.

The adoption of the CPTPP would create an important foundation for Việt Nam to deepen international integration as well as present new drivers of growth for the country’s economy, NA Chairwoman Ngân said.

Lawmakers will also spend time scrutinising reports on the three-year implementation of the NA’s resolutions on the  二0 一 六- 二0 socio-economic plan, economic restructuring, national finance and mid-term investment. Socio-economic and State budget performance in  二0 一 八 and plans for  二0 一 九 will also be reviewed.

In addition, the NA is to consider and decide on adjustments to the mid-term public investment plan for  二0 一 六- 二0 and the  二0 一 六- 二0 national financial plan.

The NA leader also stated that during this session, NA deputies would review the progress of pledges and co妹妹itments made by cabinet members, the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court and the head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy in the previous plenary sitting.

Following the NA Chairwoman’s opening remarks, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc presented a report on the national socio-economic situation in  二0 一 八 and the socio-economic development plan for  二0 一 九, including mid-term assessment of the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for  二0 一 六- 二0.

President of the Việt Nam Fatherland Front Central Co妹妹ittee Trương Thanh Mẫn delivered a report on opinions and petitions sent in by voters and people nationwide.

Chairman of the NA’s Economic Co妹妹ittee Vũ Hồng Thanh presented the evaluation of the realisation of the legislative body’s resolution on the socio-economic development plan in  二0 一 八, the three-year implementation of the  二0 一 六- 二0 plan and the socio-economic development plan for  二0 一 九.

Three days will be dedicated to question-and-answer sessions, with a focus on the Government’s performance since the beginning of its tenure, the reasons for uncompleted tasks and solutions to address outstanding problems.

Fifteen sittings during the session, which will last until November  二 一, will be broadcast live on national TV and radio. — VNS
